About
Sakonji Urokodaki is a former Water Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps who chose a quiet life of seclusion on Mount Sagiri, far from the battlefields where he once served. Recognizable by the red tengu mask he never removes in public, he conceals a face that is far gentler than his reputation suggests, having worn it ever since a demon once mocked his kindly expression as he struck it down.
Though retired from active duty, his influence on the Corps remains enormous. He is the man who trained Giyu Tomioka into the current Water Hashira, and later accepted Tanjiro Kamado as a student after the boy's family was slaughtered by Muzan Kibutsuji. Beneath his gruff exterior lies a deeply caring mentor who grieves every student lost to the Final Selection, and who places his full faith in those who survive — watching from the mountains as they carry his Water Breathing into the war against demonkind.
Abilities
Water Breathing Mastery
As a former Water Hashira, Urokodaki has mastered all eleven forms of Water Breathing, including the devastating eleventh form Dead Calm — a technique that nullifies any incoming attack by countering with minimal, serene movements.
Total Concentration Breathing
He teaches his students to maintain Total Concentration Breathing at every waking moment, a discipline that builds superhuman stamina and lets demon slayers keep fighting through wounds that would fell any ordinary warrior.
Combat Experience
Decades of battling demons have given him an instinctive read on enemy movement and breathing patterns, allowing him to instruct students in how to break an opponent's rhythm and find the perfect opening for a single decisive strike.
Swordsmithing Knowledge
Beyond combat, Urokodaki understands the deep lore of demon-slaying blades, ore selection, and the forge rituals that give each Nichirin sword its color and its strength against demon flesh.
Mountain Survival
Living as a hermit on Mount Sagiri, he has mastered the harsh terrain, cold nights, and dense fogs of the mountain — a knowledge he passes on by training students to traverse treacherous slopes blindfolded before they ever touch a sword.
Mentorship & Guidance
His greatest strength is teaching. He shaped Giyu, Sabito, Makomo, and Tanjiro into warriors capable of holding their own against the Twelve Kizuki, instilling in each both technique and the unshakable resolve to protect human life.
Legacy & Mentorship
Urokodaki's legacy is written in the warriors he has raised. Giyu Tomioka, the current Water Hashira, was his first student to survive the Final Selection, though the guilt of leaving behind his friend Sabito shaped Giyu's reserved character for life. Sabito and Makomo, both lost to the same Final Selection on Mount Fujikasane, never left their teacher — their spirits are said to linger as fox-masked guides for the next generation he trained.
When Tanjiro Kamado arrived at his door carrying a demon sister, Urokodaki saw both burden and promise. He spent two years drilling Tanjiro in Water Breathing, total concentration, and the discipline to descend the mountain through every kind of weather without rest. Before sending Tanjiro to Final Selection, he entrusted him with a carved fox mask as protection — the same blessing he had once given to Sabito and Makomo. His quiet faith in Tanjiro set in motion the entire chain of events that would eventually bring down Muzan Kibutsuji.
