Hantengu

Upper Moon Four — a whimpering coward whose hatred splits into demons that wage war on his behalf

About

Long before he wore the rank of Upper Moon Four, Hantengu was a human criminal of the lowest kind — a thief and murderer who slaughtered dozens while wailing his own innocence, insisting that his hands alone were guilty and that the man commanding them had done nothing wrong. Sentenced to death, he clung to that lie until his final hour, and it was precisely that twisted denial that caught Muzan Kibutsuji's attention. Visiting his cell, Muzan offered him blood, and the condemned man awoke as a demon — his body shrunken and frail, his mind hollowed into a childlike wretch who believes himself innocent of everything his power destroys.

As a demon, Hantengu is defined by cowardice. He cowers, flees, and weeps while his Blood Demon Art does the fighting for him, splitting his every emotion into a separate demonic body: anger becomes Sekido, delight becomes Karaku, sorrow becomes Aizetsu, and joy becomes Urogi — and merged together they summon Zohakuten, the embodiment of hatred whose drumbeats call a colossal wood dragon. This endless division made him one of Muzan's most troublesome Upper Ranks, for beheading the whimpering main body accomplishes nothing; his hatred must be dragged into the open and destroyed where it stands.

Abilities

Blood Demon Art: Emotional Manifestation

His scream tears him apart into separate demons, each an emotion given flesh, weapon, and will — while the true body shrinks to the size of an insect and hides from the fight it started.

The Four Emotion Clones

Sekido's staff calls down lightning, Karaku's fan commands the wind, Aizetsu's spear fires piercing beams, and Urogi's wings screech with sonic force — four bodies, one fractured mind.

Zohakuten, the Hatred

When Sekido absorbs the other three, the true terror emerges: an ancient-looking boy whose drumbeats summon a colossal wood dragon capable of flattening mountainsides.

Urami, the Resentment

A guardian manifestation born of self-pity, shielding the fleeing main body — with the real Hantengu concealed within, waiting for any chance to slip away.

Relentless Regeneration

Like all Upper Ranks, he regrows heads and limbs in seconds, and destroying one clone only means the hatred flows back into another — the cycle ends only when every form is gone.

Cowardice as a Weapon

His whimpering lures opponents into underestimating him while his emotions do the killing. Against Hantengu, the true battle is finding the coward behind the monsters.

Notable battles

In the Swordsmith Village, Hantengu unleashed every face of his broken soul. His four clones carved through the mountainside while the Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji hurled herself against Zohakuten and his colossal wood dragon, and Genya Shinazugawa — devouring a piece of the demon tree itself — turned its own power against it. A demon girl whose blood burned like fire seared the beast's branches away, while Tanjiro Kamado, the young swordsman who now bore a mark of his own, chased the whimpering true form through the chaos. At dawn, a single blade finally found the crawling main body, and every clone crumbled with it — Upper Moon Four withered to dust in the morning light, weeping innocence to the last.
