About
Nagato was born an Uzumaki clansman in the war-torn Village Hidden in the Rain, where both his parents were killed in front of him by stray Konoha shinobi during the Second Great Ninja War. Wandering the rain-soaked ruins with two other orphans — Konan and Yahiko — he was discovered by Jiraiya, who took the three children in and trained them for three years so they could survive on their own. During their time with Jiraiya, Nagato awakened the legendary Rinnegan — the Sage of Six Paths' own eyes — and the three orphans swore an oath to one day end the cycle of war that had destroyed their homeland. Years later, after Hanzo of the Salamander betrayed them and forced Nagato to watch Yahiko die by his own hand, Nagato's faith in the gentle path shattered. He took on the name Pain, raised six reanimated corpses as the Six Paths of Pain, and seized control of Amegakure as its self-proclaimed god — devoted to forging a weapon so terrifying that the world would know pain so deep it would never go to war again. Until one of his own teacher's other students — Naruto Uzumaki — broke his philosophy with one single answer.
Abilities
Rinnegan
The Sage of Six Paths' legendary eyes, allowing him to master all six chakra nature transformations and access abilities far beyond any Sharingan or Byakugan — the pinnacle of all dojutsu.
Six Paths of Pain
Six reanimated corpses he controls remotely through chakra receivers, each wielding one of the Six Paths' unique abilities — Deva, Asura, Human, Animal, Preta, and Naraka.
Almighty Push (Shinra Tensei)
The Deva Path's signature technique — repels any matter or ninjutsu away from him in a single devastating pulse, strong enough to flatten an entire village when used at full power.
Planetary Devastation (Chibaku Tensei)
The Deva Path's ultimate jutsu — generates a gravitational sphere in the sky that pulls the surrounding earth into a massive floating moon-sized prison around the target.
Notable battles
Pain's defining fights shape the entire second half of the series. The battle against his former master Jiraiya in the rain-drenched streets of Amegakure — where the Toad Sage finally uncovered the secret of the Six Paths but died sending the message back to Konoha — ended Pain's last tie to his old self. The Pain Assault on Konoha remains one of the most harrowing sequences in all of anime: he killed Kakashi, destroyed the entire village with a single Almighty Push, stabbed Hinata before Naruto's eyes to break his spirit, and was finally defeated only when Naruto went six-tails and then nine-tails, and met Nagato in person to deliver the answer Jiraiya had died trying to find. Reanimated by Kabuto in the Fourth Great Ninja War, Nagato fought Naruto and Killer Bee at once — and was sealed by Itachi's Totsuka Blade after choosing to believe in his old friend's dream one final time.
