Sai Yamanaka is a former member of Konoha's Root ANBU division — the secret black-ops branch led by Danzo Shimura that trained its agents to suppress all emotions, eliminate all personal attachments, and serve the village as living weapons. As an orphan raised inside Root from infancy, Sai had no name, no family, and no memory of ever smiling — only a single cherished bond with another orphan boy named Shin, who taught him to draw and whom Sai came to call brother. When Shin died of illness, Sai sealed the emotion away so deeply that for years he could not feel it. Danzo assigned him to replace Sasuke Uchiha in Team Kakashi — a stranger with a fake smile and a sketchbook full of weapons. Naruto's stubborn refusal to give up on him, Sakura's anger, and Sai's own buried longing for his lost brother slowly broke through his training. By the end of the Fourth Great Ninja War, Sai had learned to smile for real, married Ino Yamanaka, and fathered a son — Inojin — who would inherit his father's ink jutsu and his mother's mind-transfer techniques.

Super Beast Imitating Drawing
His signature technique — draws animals on his scroll with special ink infused with his chakra, then brings them to life as solid creatures that attack, fly, scout, or carry him across the battlefield.
Ink Clone Jutsu
Creates a perfect clone of himself out of living ink — used for reconnaissance, diversions, or as a body double, the clone can reform after taking a hit if any ink remains intact.
Sealing Jutsu
The Root ANBU sealing specialty — uses ink-based sealing techniques to bind opponents to surfaces or seal their movements, a skill that proved crucial against the reanimated shinobi in the war.
Lightning & Ink Art
Combined his Root training with his artistic talent — can also produce Lightning Release and uses brushwork as a weapon in its own right, slicing enemies with rapid ink strokes.
Notable battles
Sai's defining fights map his journey from emotionless weapon to true shinobi. He first met Sasuke Uchiha at Orochimaru's hideout during the Tenchi Bridge mission — where Sasuke's cold, killing intent froze even the emotionless Sai, and Naruto's rage at seeing his old friend again nearly released the Nine-Tails. In the hunt for Itachi and Sasuke, Sai fought alongside Yamato, Naruto, and Sakura against Kabuto and Orochimaru. During the Fourth Great Ninja War he joined the Surprise Attack Division and was ambushed by his own reanimated brother Shin — the very bond he had spent his life trying to forget. Sai sealed his brother with the very emotions he had been trained to suppress, proving that Root's teachings had failed to truly erase the love in his heart. After the war he served as a senior advisor to Naruto's Hokage administration, married Ino Yamanaka, and raised their son Inojin — passing the ink jutsu he had once shared only with Shin to a new generation.
